COLUMBIA, Mo. Veterans United Home Loans announced today it was named No. 12 on People's 50 Companies That Care list, jointly chosen by People and Great Place to Work. This is the second consecutive year the nationwide mortgage lender has been named to the list. The list spotlights 50 U.S. companies that have succeeded in business while also demonstrating respect, compassion, and concern for their communities, their employees and the environment.
At Veterans United we strongly believe in giving back and enhancing lives, said Dr. Amanda Andrade, chief people officer at Veterans United. "As a company, our measure of achievement is not based on profits, but on the positive impact we have on our borrowers, our co-workers, our families and our communities. Our employees promote a culture that genuinely cares about the well-being of others. That's at the heart of who we are at Veterans United.
The Veterans United Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the company, took its Week of Giving campaign on the road in 2017, donating $1.35 million to 135 different charitable organizations throughout the country. Employees at Veterans United branch locations around the United States chose different organizations in their communities to receive $10,000 each on behalf of the Veterans United Foundation. Employees from Veterans United Home Loans at Scott Air Force Base surprised the Delta Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairments, The Mission Continues, Illinois Patriot Guard Riders, The Covering House and the Belleville Area Humane Society with $10,000 donations.
In 2016, Veterans United Home Loans and its Foundation gave $1.5 million to Welcome Home, a Community for Veterans, for the construction of a new emergency homeless shelter for Veterans in Columbia, Missouri. An additional $1 million gift was made to Patriot Place to construct permanent long-term housing for Veterans on the same campus. In addition to the monetary donations, employees from Veterans United have donated their time to help with the demolition of the dilapidated motel that previously sat on the site, assisted with moving in and putting together furniture for the new apartments and helped cultivate a garden on the campus. Employees also volunteer for kitchen duty and serve meals at Welcome Home the first and third Tuesday of each month.
To identify the "50 Companies That Care," People teamed up with Great Place to Work to produce the list using the research firm's extensive database and inside knowledge of outstanding workplaces around the globe. Rankings are based on surveys representing over 4.5 million employees' experiences of how their workplaces have made a difference in their lives and their communities. Rankings also reflect Great Place to Work's assessment of the generosity of each organization's benefits, philanthropic and community support, with focus on activities occurring in the last year.
